Developing a passion and deep understanding for mathematics

The approach to mathematics in CCSD59 is one in which students develop a passion for math through relevant and authentic learning experiences. Our goal is to ensure that students learn mathematics at high levels, can make sense of mathematics in the world around them, can apply mathematical ideas, and have the necessary skills to demonstrate procedural fluency.

As Dr. Jo Boaler, Stanford University Professor of Mathematics Education, shares, “We don’t need students to calculate quickly in math. We need students who can ask good questions, map out pathways, reason about complex solutions, set up models and communicate in different forms. All of these ways of working are encouraged by the Common Core.”

By developing a curriculum and approach that engages students in high-level mathematical thinking, embraces the belief that all students can achieve at high levels, and provides real-life applications of math in collaborative, inquiry-based environments, we believe we will develop the capacity in all students to be successful and enjoy math as they transfer learning in a multitude of contexts throughout their lives.
